Hippodamus is a cluster of technological networks and the ones connecting people which both function together with the aim to perform effective learning. Technological networks refer to the equipment (instruments or sensors) and to the technologies (computer systems, Internet) that support the learning process. The project involves the construction of a network of automatic weather stations for the measurement of atmospheric parameters at the school location (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, rain, wind direction and speed) and the creation of a centralized database related to these measurements. Using the WWW, a methodology has been developed for the acquisition, retrieval and didactic presentation of the data and metadata so that students understand their meaning and the principles that govern the parameters studied.Strong points and opportunities:The project encourages the development of new teaching and learning capabilities through:
• the search of information – knowledge in multiple sources (with emphasis to digital ones),
• the active participation of students in the learning process and in the analysis of measurements,
• student collaboration in the classroom and in other schools,
• new methods of educational content distribution to teachers,
• communication between students and scientists/experts in the field,
• connection of scientific and local society to the education process.Limitations:The importance to have the necessary equipment for atmospheric measurements, trained teachers to perform the processes and to support the whole system to be maintained.Added value with regards to the 3 topics of the MASS project:The use of digital tools for the introduction and comprehension of science related principles to students and the increased experience in informatics and Internet applications and services.Any prerequisites needed:Technical infrastructure, trained teachers, technical and scientific support of the schools.
