With the nature calendar scholars investigate how nature reacts to climate change. Natural processes, such as flowering, falling of leaves, start of bird migration, take place every year around the same period. This so called “nature calendar” of species is strongly influenced by temperature, precipitation and length of the day. Climate change influences the natural calendar of many species noticeably.

The module consists of several parts in which scholars 1) follow the growth stadia of trees, 2) pass on their data to Wageningen University, 3) interpret their own data or compare it to data from other observers and 4) link their data to literature about the effects of climate change for agriculture, change of species in their own environment, economic effects, effects for hay fever patients etc.
Dutch schools can participate in the Nature Calendar as part of the GLOBE program in which the nature calendar is one of the modules.Strong points and opportunities:- Wageningen University and Research Center is a partner of the project for support in how to collect and analyse the collected data.
- Scientists from Wageningen University use the data collected by students and report how the scholar data is being used.Limitations:No limitations identifiedAdded value with regards to the 3 topics of the MASS project:- The combination of (‘old school’) classroom materials, outdoor measurements and an online database with world-wide measurements.Any prerequisites needed:None
